Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways is the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, established by royal decree in July 2003 and commencing commercial operations in November of that year. The airline was created to serve as a premium long-haul carrier based in the UAE capital, complementing rather than competing directly with Dubai-based rivals, and it has grown rapidly to become one of the principal Gulf network carriers.

The airline operates from its hub at Abu Dhabi International Airport, where it moved into the purpose-built Terminal A in late 2023. From Abu Dhabi, Etihad connects passengers to destinations across Europe, North America, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Australia, with particularly strong traffic flows between Europe and Asia-Pacific markets routed through its Gulf hub.

Etihad operates a modern widebody-focused fleet built around the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Boeing 777 (including the 777X on order), and Airbus A350-1000, supplemented by Airbus A320 family aircraft for regional services and a small number of Airbus A380s that returned to service in 2023. The carrier is known for premium products including its First Class Apartments and the three-room Residence cabin on the A380. Its Etihad Guest frequent flyer programme offers redemptions across a network of airline and lifestyle partners, though Etihad is notably not a member of any of the three global alliances, instead pursuing bilateral codeshare and equity partnerships.

After a turbulent period of heavy losses tied to its earlier equity-partnership strategy involving carriers such as Alitalia and Air Berlin, Etihad restructured around a leaner mid-sized network model and returned to sustained profitability, positioning itself for renewed growth under its ongoing fleet and route expansion plans.
